ABOUT - SUDARSHAN BHAGAT
Sudarshan Bhagat (born – 20th October 1969) is an Indian politician from Village – Tangardih, Block – Dumri Distt. – Gumla (Jharkhand) who belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is a member of the Indian Parliament, and currently represents Lohardaga, Lok Sabha constituency. He is the Minister of State for Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare in the Shri Narendra Modi led BJP government.
He has been an active member of the ABVP (the student arm of BJP) during his student life and held the post of State Joint Secretary in the joint Bihar. Thereafter, he remained associated with various social activities, like, that of Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram which worked for the upliftment of tribals. He later ventured into active politics, in 1995, as a General Secretary of BJYM in District – Gumla and participated in the movement for the establishment of separate Jharkhand state. He held the post of State Secretary & National Executive Member in BJYM in Jharkhand state and further, as State Vice-President of BJP in Jharkhand state.
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
Sudarshan Bhagat was born on 20th October 1969. He belongs to a family of an agricultural background. His father late Shri Kalsai Bhagat was the Principal in a Government school. He has three siblings. He is the eldest son in the family.
He graduated with a degree in B.A. (HONS.) from Kartik Oraon College, Gumla, University of Ranchi, Jharkhand. He used to get up at 4 am in the morning, would go for a walk and do yoga & meditation in his hostel days. He was a sincere kid right from the beginning. He has a decent upbringing. He studied under lamps because there was no electricity in his village and without a proper study-table. His family used to sleep on mats.
EARLY POLITICAL CAREER
He became an activist of BJP’S youth wing Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) during his college days. From 2000 – 2005, he held the position of a member of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. He was a Minister of State – Human Resources in Jharkhand Government from 2000 – 2003. And, further, he was the Minister of State for Sports, Arts & Culture and Animal Husbandry & Dairy. He also served as a Minister in the Department of Welfare in Govt. of Jharkhand. In 2009, he was elected to 15th Lok Sabha and became Member of the Parliament (MP).
During his first term as an MP, he was the member of various Parliamentary Committees like Labor, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Petroleum & Natural Gas.
In May 2014, he re-elected to 16th Lok Sabha (2nd term). In Shri Narendra Modi’s BJP government, he held a various important position like Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, as Minister of State in the Ministry of Rural Development and Minister of State, in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. He is currently assuming the responsibility of Minister of State in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs since September 2017.
He has visited several countries like Uganda, South Africa, Burundi and Rwanda for his official assignments and invited The Presidents and The Prime-Ministers of these countries for India-Africa forum summit (IAFS) which was held in New Delhi.
He also represented India in SAARC Conference on Poverty Alleviation which held in Bhutan.
ARREST AND EXILE
Sudarshan Bhagat was arrested in 2011, in connection with the hoisting of Tricolor at Lal Chowk, Sri Nagar on the occasion of Indian Republic Day, to challenge Kashmiri separatists, who hoisted Pakistani Flag in the same place.
The BJP youth wing started the march towards Lal Chowk, Sri Nagar to unite Indians on “Kashmir issue” and show Kashmiri separatists that the Kashmir is an integral part of India. This created the controversy and BJPYM members were stopped, arrested and kept in custody.
He got married to Smt. Krishana Toppo in the year 2001 and the couple is blessed with two sons. He was very close to his mother. He is a man of simple living and high thinking. People close to Bhagat have described him as someone who does not like to socialize much.
He holds a special interest in reading historical and philosophical literature. He has a calm and gentle behavior since childhood. He loves listening to Indian music, traveling places of historical interests, archaeological sites, and monuments.
During his school days, he was very much into athletics and games like football and hockey. He has a deep closeness with peace and nature. He loves to roam around in the woods during his spare time to find peace and solace.
He developed a deep fondness towards books. Because his mother was a primary school teacher, she would bring him books from the library for reading. He loves to read books like Geeta, the philosophies of Buddha and Mahavira, books by Geeta press on Dharma and Darshan, magazines of Akhand Jyoti, Gayatri Parivar and Dharmik Kalyan. Books affected him deeply and as a result, he became Vegan.
Bhagat is deeply rooted in his tribal community and he is a firm believer of Hindu religion. Swami Vivekanand, Mahatma Gandhi, Buddha, Mahavira, and Birsa Munda has deeply influenced him in shaping up his life.
